Old-Fashioned Stewed Apples & Custard
A nostalgic dessert that's as simple as it gets. Apples cook down gently with cinnamon and a hint of orange until soft and fragrant, then go on the table warm with custard. Any leftovers make a lovely breakfast over porridge or yoghurt.
You’ll need
- Remaining apples, peeled, cored and sliced
- 1/3 cup water
- 1–2 tbsp sugar or honey, optional
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- Small squeeze of orange juice
- Custard, to serve
- Place apples, water, cinnamon and orange juice in a saucepan.
- Cover and cook gently for 8–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft but still have some texture.
- Taste before adding sugar or honey — the apples may already be sweet enough.
- Serve warm with custard.
Leftovers are delicious cold with yoghurt or spooned over porridge.
