Recycling and Reusing Food Scraps
It's easy to recycle your food waste and stop it going to landfill.
Food scraps make up around 40% of household rubbish. When it breaks down in the dump, it forms harmful greenhouse gases, contributing to climate change.
Before you throw away your food scraps, you may wish to consider recycling or reusing them. Here are some great ideas:
-
Start a Worm Farm: Worms are a great way to add probiotics and nutrients to your soil.
-
Save carrot peels, potato skins, and celery tops to add to chicken stock.
-
Make potato peel chips out of potato peels.
-
Replant Vegetable Scraps: retain the seeds, pits, and cuttings of your veggies and regrow at home.
-
Freeze broccoli and kale stalks to use in soups.
-
Compost Your Food Scraps: you can buy one or set up a very simple one using a cardboard box and chicken wire.
-
Place cucumber peels at entrance points in your home to deter ants.
-
Get Some Chickens: they will eat anything from lettuce leaves to carrot peels!
