Week 1 News (4/1/21)

Happy New Year!

We hope that your year is shaping up to be positive and healthy!

Some of you may already know that when we started OrganicBox 11 years ago, we had the aim to help people to heal and revitalise by providing access to certified organic produce, free from toxins and grown with love. However to truly gain the benefits of an organic lifestyle, you may wish to detoxify all aspects of your life. As much as we all love Christmas and New Years, it can be a time when we overload ourselves physically and mentally so it’s a great time to start. You can read on for ideas below.

Detoxify your Body
Get a good night’s sleep

Sleep is the bodies way of detoxifying, rejuvenating tired cells and reenergising your body and mind for the day ahead. It is important for adults to get at least 8 hours of unbroken sleep each night as sleep works in 4 hour cycles. It is also important to sleep at the same time each night to maintain meridian function - research has shown that shift workers have higher instances of heart related disorders, cancer and depression.
If you struggle with getting to sleep easily, you could try:

  • Organic herbal chamomile tea with honey can be helpful, but try to make sure to leave as much time as possible between eating and sleeping as the digestion process is stimulating.
  • Creating routine. Your body is programmed to work to a rhythm that is dictated by inputs such as sunlight, exertion and food. If you are able to provide it with these at similar times each day it will help your body to keep step with when it needs to sleep. It may help to find and download an app or set yourself alarms to remind you.
  • Burn organic lavender oil or give yourself a calming massage to destress before bed.
  • Take magnesium supplements or eat foods high in magnesium such as nuts and bananas.
  • Accept that it is okay to say no and to put yourself first. If you are tired it is okay to go home early from a Christmas party and put your own needs to sleep first.

Drink LOTS of water
Water stimulates the bodies natural detoxifying processes by cleansing the liver and kidneys and purifying the blood. Try to drink the recommended 6-8 glasses each day, with a higher intake in times of stress and strain.

As mentioned above, exercise is a natural biological process that our bodies are programmed to do regularly in order to create rhythms of sleep, digestion and healing. Our world has made things so ‘easy’ that we feel we have no need to exercise in order to achieve our bodies needs of shelter, food etc, forgetting that we DO need to exercise to create rhythm to our lives and for a healthy body and organs. Studies show that exercise assists the lungs, kidneys, immune system and intestines in naturally detoxifying the body.
Exercise also involving the breath and meditation such as Yoga and Tai Chi have the added bonus of helping to detoxify your mind but all exercise has the capacity to become meditative and to improve mood via the release of hormones and endorphins.

Detoxify Your Thoughts
Stay Positive

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or CBT works on the idea that that our moods are controlled by our thoughts, and therefore if you can control your thoughts, you can also control your moods. Research has shown that when comparing groups who practiced CBT with those who didn’t, the CBT group was able to significantly reduce depressive symptoms and keep them at bay long term.
Creating positive affirmations and placing them around your home is a great way to use CBT in a proactive way. Another way is to journal negative thoughts as you catch them and  try to think of a way to reframe the negative thought into a positive one by focusing on a positive aspect to the situation or on a way to frame it as ‘solvable’ and the positive outcome.

Simplify Your Life
Our lives have become increasingly stressful and focussed on the success of achievement. But are we happier? The benefits of simplifying your life by becoming mindful of the experiences and journey leading to the outcome rather than focussing on its ultimate success will have a significant impact on your mood. Having less of a focus on outcomes will allow you to remove the parts of your life that only serve to achieve, rather than actually making you happy. 

Gratitude Attitude
Being grateful for the things in our life is possible for everyone. You may want to focus on your talents, your family and friends, your freedoms and abilities. In any situation, there is always something to be grateful for. Although searching for it may take some extra effort, the benefits of doing so have a scientifically proven impact on your mood and health.

Detoxify  Your Relationships
Be Kind to Others…

Doing things for others such as helping them or giving them gifts will also help you to be healthier and happier. You may want to give a special present to an elderly or lonely friend or relative, volunteer at a shelter or simply make a special meal and invite the people you love over.
When interacting with other people, they are bound to annoy us sometimes. If you can try to act with kindness, it will help you to avoid the toxicity of arguments and anger.

But Also Be Kind To Yourself
However, it is most important that you are kind to yourself. If a relationship or activity is toxic and it can’t be resolved with kindness, it is sometimes best to avoid them altogether. It is okay for you to politely excuse yourself and walk away from a conversation that is making you unhappy or to say no to excessively socialising with people that are making you unhappy.
Remember that you are your most important relationship and you deserve a happy and healthy life!
